When buying a computer, it is worth paying attention to the parameters of its components. Especially important are the CPU, graphics card, hard drive, motherboard and RAM. The last one has very important functions. Among other things, it is responsible for the performance of the entire system as well as for the fastest possible launch and operation of all programs. As you can see, it plays a very important role and improves computer operation.

RAM – What is it? What is it useful for?

RAM is fundamentally different from the memory that comes with hard drives. The latter can be filled with any user files and does not affect the operation of the computer. On the other hand, RAM is a medium that contains all information about programs and processes taking place throughout the system. Therefore, the efficiency and speed of your equipment depends mainly on it. Any shortage is easy to catch at the time of starting the system or any application.

RAM is responsible for the ongoing data processing when the computer is in use. To properly choose a component for your equipment, you need to analyze some very important aspects of use. It is worth adhering to the principle that a large number of important programs running at the same time requires an increased amount of RAM. Work stability, so desired by users, depends on the speed of reading and writing data. This is due to the fact that the processor is not able to process all resources and therefore it is not possible to have permanent access to all computer resources.

The vast majority of devices have capabilities that allow you to expand or replace components. This also applies to RAM. When the user comes to the conclusion that the computer is too slow to process programs, he may be tempted to expand his resources. In this way, the device will receive a new life, and this modification will speed up the operation of the system and other applications.

Which parameters are the most important?

This subassembly is described by several important parameters. It is very important to check its type as it will decide if it is compatible with your motherboard. Otherwise, it will not be possible to connect to it and the computer will not function properly. The first models were DDR and DDR2, which have become obsolete due to their slow read and write speeds. Currently, DDR3 and DDR4 memory are in use, characterized by several times higher speed and much larger capacity of one RAM chip.

DDR3 memory modules have a capacity not exceeding 16 GB. The reading speed is from 800 to 2400 MT / s. DDR4 memory is a novelty on the market with a capacity that can reach up to 64 GB and the read speed reaches 3200 MT / s. Compared to the previous generations, it not only has the best parameters, but also energy-saving.

The computer manufacturer will certainly include information about the memory chip parameters that must be met to match the motherboard. However, the aforementioned type is not the only guideline that should attract the user’s attention. In order to properly select the RAM memory for the computer, the following values should be analyzed:

      • type of motherboard – the most important parameter that must be met by RAM. It must be compatible with the motherboard. All the necessary data can be found in the specification. There are the maximum values that a given model is able to handle. It applies to both capacity and speed of reading,
      • capacity – it has been assumed that the more RAM, the computer’s performance increases. All running programs take up part of the operating memory and therefore it starts to run out at some points. To prevent this from happening, it is worth buying additional memory chips or a device with a high value of this parameter,
      • CAS latency – the RAM latency parameter is the time it takes from sending a request to read. Bones with a small number of parameters work best,
      • clock frequency – this is how the performance of the memory model is presented. It is the speed at which the computer executes given commands. The highest values are ideal for computer games and the use of demanding programs.

What RAM will be the best?

Of course, as in many cases, the choice of component will depend on the user’s preferences and the programs that will be run by him. The RAM with the highest performance will be dedicated to people working with graphics programs and players. The simplest bones will work well in office work. For small user requirements, low-capacity and low-clocking modules should be sufficient. They are enough for everyday work or using the Internet. They are characterized by a low price, not exceeding PLN 200. For much more demanding users, devices with a clock frequency of 15 or 16 and a minimum capacity of 16 GB will be intended. However, in this case, you should take into account higher purchase costs, reaching even several hundred zlotys.
